Why Most People Fail At Losing Weight

Why do so many people fail at losing weight? Is it because they are lazy? No. Is it because they are addicted to food? No. Is it because they aren’t good at exercising? No. Failure at weight loss stems from a few main factors:

* People don't truly understand the risks of being overweight. Why do most want to lose weight? Most would say to look better. Looking better certainly is a benefit of losing weight, but this shouldn’t be the sole reason to lose weight. There is a 1000 pound gorilla in the room and it’s often ignored. Being overweight for a long period of time kills thousands of people each year. Thousands of studies have show and proven without any doubt that losing body fat will improve and lengthen your life. This eBook will give you a picture of the dangers of being overweight. Knowing the dangers of being overweight is a tremendous motivator to not only lose fat, but to keep it off.
* People don't commit to permanent lifestyle changes. So many people think of a "diet" as something temporary. When they are on a "diet" they restrict themselves so much that they are miserable. Sooner or later failure is inevitable because of the unreasonable demands of most "diets." Some of these diets force you to only eat certain foods (e.g., no carbs, special soups etc…) You, like myself, have probably tried them before. The key to losing weight long term is to make gradual lifestyle changes you can stick to forever.
* Most individuals are not provided the truthful facts of losing weight and becoming healthier. With the conflicting information in the media, and all of the different lose weight quick fad diets, it’s understandable why so many people really don’t know the truth about losing fat and keeping it off long term. We will go over the no-nonsense truth.
* Most people don't understand they are constantly either gaining fat, or losing fat. There is no in-between. Some people justify binging or giving up because they hit a small road-block. This isn’t an all or nothing game. For example, when I was overweight, if I ate an unhealthy lunch, I’d go ahead and eat an unhealthy dinner since I already "messed up" the day. Or I’d say, I’ll start eating healthy on Monday since I’ve already eaten poorly this weekend. Every person at times eats too much. The successful people will not let a road bump completely derail their entire lifestyle change. If you are not implementing positive lifestyle changes and losing weight, you are gaining weight. Again, there is no "in-between."
* Most people don't realize what they consume each day. So many overweight people eat thousands of extra calories and fat without realizing it. It’s tough to know if you are gaining weight or losing weight each day unless you are keeping an eye on what you’re consuming. Later in the eBook you will be given an easy way to keep track of your consumption.

Alms

My heart is what it was before,
A house where people come and go
But it is winter with your love,
The sashes are beset with snow.

I light the lamp and lay the cloth,
I blow the coals to blaze again
But it is winter with your love
The frost is thick upon the pane

I know a winter when it comes
The leaves are listless on the boughs;
I watched your love a little while
And brought my plants into the house.

I water them and turned them south,
I snap the dead brown from the stem
But it is winter with your love,
I only tend and water them.

There was a time I stood and watched
The small ill-natured sparrows' fray
I loved the beggar that I fed,
I cared for what he had to say.

I stood and watched him out of sight;
Today I reach around the door
And set a bowl upon the step
My heart is what it was before.

But it is winter with your love;
I scatter crumbs upon the sill
And close the window - and the birds
May take or leave them, as they will.

When I Was One-And-Twenty

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
"Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
"The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
'Tis paid with sighs aplenty
And sold for endless rue."
And I am two-and-twenty
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

Why Love Is Our Most Powerful, Lasting Form of Activism

Who you love and how you love them is as much a statement about your social conscience as the letters you write to Congress or the votes you cast. It's harder to be good to someone else.

People who want to see the world bettered -- made more just and honest and kind -- often set their gaze on the farthest horizon. Our instinct, as progressives with global perspectives, is to obsess over situations far afield of our own backyards -- Indonesia, Sudan, the Middle East. These situations stir a sort of Peace Corp romance within us, a love affair with that which might make us feel gallant and extraordinary for caring.

I am as guilty as the next bleeding heart of focusing the majority of my energies on problems I see as compelling in large part because of their strangeness to me. But when I sit with myself, quiet my righteous indignation, my whiny white guilt, my attachment to the idea that I am a humble truth teller among powerful fibbers, I realize that it is not the world outside of me that is in most desperate need of my world-changing instincts. It is the world inside of me, the world between me and my beloved.

We are so often wide awake about the decisions our elected officials make in the political, public realm and so asleep about our private choices. Our relationships can be sites of radical transformation but are so often soporifics. They have the capacity to tilt the whole world in the direction of ingenuity and kindness, and yet we are so often looking outside of ourselves for the tipping point.

Who you love and how you love them is as much a statement about your social conscience -- perhaps even a far more accurate and moving statement -- as the letters you write to Congress or the votes you cast. It is harder to be good to someone else. It has the potential to make them be good to others. And others are the fulcrum of social change.

Some of the ways in which love can be radical are quite obvious and tied to institutions. The choice of whether or not to get married in a nation where the status (and its tax benefits) is still doled out discriminatorily is a powerful one.

Reflections on ritual, commitment and partnership are quite radical in a world that is pushing you to link your love to a market, spend conspicuously, be a celebrity-for-a-day no matter what the cost, call it quits half the time. Muting the cacophony of outside propaganda about love and weddings -- and listening to your own inner answer -- is incredibly difficult and also morally necessary. What promises do you want to make in what ways before whom?

And, of course, beyond the obvious is the most critical -- what kind of relationship do you want to be in? What sort of partnership will push you to be your best, freest, happiest self? It is not just a matter of reversing roles or reacting to those models you have seen before, but wiping the slate clean and then imagining the most humane and transcendent of possible unions. How good could your love be? How fortifying? How honest? How can you create a love that reflects your values instead of parroting the culture's bottom line-driven definitions?

If you think that love is finite, think again. Just as your dollar has ramifications well beyond the taste of the organic, locally-grown apple you buy, your devotion can influence whole generations. Look at Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving -- the interracial couple that pushed Loving vs. Virginia all the way to the Supreme Court -- striking down the last anti-miscegenation law on the books and ushering in a new era of legally-sanctioned love across racial boundaries. June will mark the 40th anniversary of their courage as the Loving Day campaign reminds us.

Think about Barack Obama, the product of a short-lived, early 60s college romance between a black African exchange student and a white Kansan. His interracial identity, as he so beautifully explains in his first book, is the roots from which his political ideals have grown. Fifty years after his parents fell in love, they are both gone but their creation is changing the way America understands itself.

Anyone who doubts that our most intimate relationship can also be the site of our most impactful activism need look no further than the second wave of feminism. A generation of women insisted that the personal was the political, that they would only be in relationship with those who respected their full humanity, and we -- their daughters and sons -- are engaged in far more fair partnerships as a result. (Though we have much more work to do if we are to fully realize their dream of equal parenting.)

And, of course, decades of queer men and women have bravely come out to their families and friends, colleagues and clergy, and in the process, redefined family. Their challenge of notions of normality have freed us all -- gay, straight, bisexual, weary of labels -- to be more honest about our own complex sexualities. Lives have been lost in this quest -- Brandon Teena, Harvey Milk, Matthew Shepard etc. -- but countless lives have also been saved.

bell hooks, the guru of love as revolution, wrote: "The moment we chose to love we begin to move towards freedom." I think she's wrong, but not by much.

It is not the moment we chose to love that we begin to move towards freedom, because love is so rarely a choice. Love is an instinct, an accident, an epiphany, a stomach ache. It can feel like incarceration and pardon, alienation and intimacy, tragedy and comedy. It so often grabs us by the collar and drags us in whatever direction it feels magnetized. We don't choose it. It harangues us.

It is the moment we critically and consciously choose how to shape our love that we move towards freedom. It is a critical response to our commercialized culture of romance, a rejection of that which feels outdated, a vision of a more inclusive, more authentic, more liberating relationship. In fact, the moment we choose to shape our love is the first, most critical step in shaping the whole God damn world.

What is Love?

Love
Definition: Love is the unconditional acceptance of all beings, all living things, and even the inanimate. True love, as in the love of God for each creation, requires no specific behavior or ability to justify nor sustain the love.

Example: Generously listening to everyone around him, Jeremey began to feel a deep and unconditional love for everyone and everything. This brought him peace and serenity that had priviously escaped him

Helping children develop a love of reading

Empower the Children by developing the interest for reading

How do you make little children love reading? Make it fun! Be creative while you stress the importance of it, with excitement!

Just as sight words are used in a classroom, they can be used in your own kitchen! While I am still a believer of phonics, when teaching children to read, I encourage your kitchen to be used as your child's very own classroom! Post words, such a "clock", "counter", "light", or "toaster" next to the appropriate items on colored index cards! Also, have your child learn how to read his/her cookbook with you, as you prepare to whip up a meal.

Using measuring spoons and cups will teach them about mathematical fractions. Visually, show them that four measuring cups is the same as a quart of milk. While they are learning the foundation of math computations, you are enhancing the value of reading.

Go out for pizza or to a diner and ask them to read the children's menu. See what words they can point out on their own and emphasize how nice it will be when they can read everything! Show them that words are everywhere! Read to the the story, "A Day with No Math", and then as them what the world would be like with no written words. Of course if there were no words at all, there would be no thoughts, but let us be more concrete. Ask them what their day would be like with no written words. There would be no menus, no books to learn from, no McDonald logos, no bus schedules, no traffic signs, etc. Would there be chaos or order? Start small and then they will soon be developing critical thinking skills which will take them to a new level.

Take them to the local library weekly and show them all the people that like to read and who spend their time there. Get answers to questions that they want to learn about. You might ask them if they know why the sky is blue or what happens to the birds during the winter. Show them where to find the answers to those questions and teach them how to navigate through different areas in the library so that they will learn the mechanics of searhing for answers to more questions.

Have a reading contest at home and have them write a short book review when they are older. Why did they like the book? Would they recommend the book to others? Most of all, model the behavior; if they see that you like to read, then chances are, they will learn that too!Have fun, be creative, make it part of their summer routine before they go out to play! Set up rules, encourage, curiosity, and make it part of your lives. You will see, that being smarter will add confidence to their life and will open up so many doors of opportunities.

Ask your children what they think that they will be when they grow up and show them what it takes to get there. All careers, no matter what they are, need people who can communicate by writing clearly and speaking correctly; therefore, let's start with the school subject of Language Arts. To be anything in life, reading and writing is needed, so get started, and implore the value of homework and schooling. If they excel in reading, the easier school will be, and then they will be on the road to a successful career and life!

The Central Role of the Family in Personality Development

In the occasion of an international conference on promoting strategies for world peace, Dr. Seidel presented a paper about the role of marriage in contemporary culture. Here is the full text of this paper.

The Central Role of the Family in Personality Development

“The Family is the only secure foundation. You must have the support and love of a family or you don't have much at all.” (Mitch Albom),(1).

Introduction

Honored guests, ladies and gentlemen.
It is a great honor for me to speak to you today. Let me start with a brief personal introduction.

It is now more than thirty years that I have lived in the U.S. and Canada. While teaching subjects in theology and philosophy in several academic institutions, I developed a special interest for the field of marriage and family. Being married with my loving wife Elisabeth who is from France, we both treasure the experience of having raised one son, Chris, and one daughter, Diesa, who are now our adult children. Being keenly aware of our share of mistakes in building our family, we thought it is a good idea to allow other couples to learn from our experience. Thus, we conduct relationship enrichment seminars with the goal to help couples and families to discover the power of genuine love.

The Family in Today's Society

It may be useful to describe briefly the situation of the family in the U.S. for a possible comparison with the European situation. It seems to me that form one perspective family life in the U.S. reflects our capability to cope with abundance and affluence. What is the verdict? I have to admit that on many counts we are failing. There seems to be a lack of internal strength to walk the talk. Two reasons emerge for explaining that inability to build successful human relationships in the midst of an increasingly materialistic consumer culture. One is our often unconscious acceptance of a self-centered individualism that insists on the right to do what is best for me. The other reason follows from such thinking and can be called a mindset of unrealistic expectations. Whatever comes our way, it does not seem good enough. Let me illustrate the predicament of a declining family life. I will start with a profile of a somewhat typical American couple, Sally and Tom.

Sally thinks: I never imagined that my life with him would be so difficult. I thought I could change him after we are married but twenty years have past and he still irritates me with his uncivilized manners and uncaring behavior. Leaving his dirty socks and underwear on the floor, expecting me to clean up after him, and raiding the fridge at his whim, showing no self-control in his eating and drinking habits, are just a few of those annoying daily incidents that drive me up the wall. I do not even want to speak about his snoring and his uncontrolled raising of his voice when he thinks he needs to proof that he is right. All he wants is sex and it seems that intimacy is not even in his dictionary. He is so irresponsible, not making any clear plan for our future, always living in his own world and being oblivious to what is happening around him. I dreamed of romance, affection and a life of togetherness, really sharing with each other, but I feel I am the last person on his list.

Tom thinks: Here we go again, how can she be so sensitive. She behaves like a princess on a pea. She worries about every little detail and gets upset if things do not turn out her way. She is always on my case trying to turn me into some kind of superman. Once her mood of giving instructions takes over, I feel like a two-year-old being told how to lead my life, and I end up doing things I really did not want to do. These are the moments when my self-esteem hits rock bottom. I thought our life together would be like teamwork sharing our joys and burdens equally, but I feel I am getting the short end of the stick. No matter how hard I try to please her, she leaves me with the feeling that it is not good enough. How can I handle the ever increasing financial pressure when she seems to be stuck with her own version of financial reality assuming there is a never ending flow of cash pouring into our home. She wants to dine fine and have her dream vacation and I feel stuck in an emotional pit because I cannot deliver. So I ask myself: where is the teamwork?

What do we learn from such a profile? It appears that today's marriages suffer from an increasing tension between unrealistic dreams and the reality of unfulfilled expectations. Often, when such a tension seems unbearable it leads the couple to divorce even if they may be aware of the devastating effects divorce has on their children. In the final analysis, it is the voice of the weakest family members, namely, the children, that best describes the quality of family life.

According to Dr. James Dobson, a well known American family therapist, one elementary school teacher in California gave a simple assignment to the children of her class: to write down sentences that begin with “I wish”. She expected answers like “I wish to be a pilot”, “I wish to be a movie star”, or “I wish to be a professional athlete”. To her surprise, she read the following sentences: ”I wish my dad had more time for me”, “ I wish I had only one father and one mother”, “ I wish my mother would stop having boy friends. They botch up my life”, “ I wish my parents would not withhold their love when I have bad grades”. The list of similar responses continued. More than 80% of the answers related to issues connected to dysfunctional families, thus reflecting the dismal statistics of a divorce rate of more than 50%.

But are the other five out of ten couples happy? Family experts have a negative answer. Only one or two out of ten couples seem to have a harmonious marriage. Family life is increasingly exposed to undermining influences such as the menace of free sex, adultery, pornography, homosexuality and lesbianism. The whole culture, in particular the entertainment industry, appears to be saturated with abusive sex, resulting in the increase of teenage pregnancies, abortions and sexual transmitted diseases, in particular AIDS.

A New Vision for the Family

Having said all that, I am still convinced that there is another side to the story. There are many conscientious people who are working tirelessly to bring back traditional family values. There is the Marriage Encounter Movement and Retrouvaille providing support for couples who seek enrichment in their relationship and helping couples whose marriage is on the rocks so that they are able to avoid the divorce trap. There are the Marriage Savers an initiative directed at Christian ministers and Jewish rabies to provide extensive marriage preparation and counseling. There is Divorce Busting, Relationship Enhancement and How the One of You Can Bring the Two of You Together, to name a few more approaches to marriage therapy. Furthermore, there are organizations that promote abstinence based sex education such as Free Teens and the Pure Love Alliance that receive increasingly acceptance from public and private schools. One could ask why is there not more success in healing dysfunctional families.

Even if I risk committing the fallacy of simplification, let me offer one answer.
Successful marriages and families need both, a spiritual commitment and relationship skills. Most family therapists focus on educating their clients on the skill level and develop sophisticated psychological approaches to relationship building. But where does the motivation and commitment come from to follow through with repetitive and demanding exercises that aim at increasing self mastery and the sensitivity level towards one's spouse? In my view, such a lasting commitment for improving family relationships has its roots in our love for God and the ensuing active spiritual life for all family members.

At this point, let me offer a brief account of Rev. Moon's vision of a healthy family.
What is included in that understanding of the original God-given potential of a fulfilled family life? Human development advances in stages of building loving relationships. The experience of love does not just happen in a general way by reaching out to others, but it is originally designed to take place within the family. In other words, first we need to build loving relationships with family members, thus experiencing growth towards maturation, and then we will be able to extend our love to the world around us.

The major aspect of love is the fact that it starts with our partner. We cannot generate love by ourselves but we need to transcend our own self, making it empty so to speak. Based on that condition of overcoming self-centeredness and living totally for our partner, love will appear. Family therapists agree that love is the decision to make your partner the number one person in your life (1). They also agree that persevering in such a decision to live for the sake of your spouse is hard work and requires the daily commitment to transcend personal preferences. In other words, the emerging higher reality of the marital union receives now priority over individualistic considerations.

It is the family where we experience four successive stages of loving relationships, namely, children's love, sibling love, conjugal love and parental love. Each of these loving relationships effects a distinct formation in the personality of the family members. Rev. Moon speaks of “four realms of heart” to emphasize that each human being has the potential to develop his or her “heart” in terms of attaining a unique loving personality. The experience of the four types of loving relationships in the family then contribute their formative influence to our personal development (2). Thus, the family provides education for the experience of love and it also reveals the ultimate meaning of love as the connecting medium between the temporal and the eternal realms. That is to say, the experience of loving family relationships in the physical, temporal order prepares human beings for their existence in the spiritual, eternal order (3).

It may take some effort to understand the unique characteristics of these four basic types of love that define family life. Generally, marriage and family therapists use a psychological approach for analyzing the love relationships among family members. Here, the experience of love is primarily seen as a natural occurrence and explanations are expected to move within the observable physical realm (4). However, upon further reflection, we may conclude that the reality of love is not the product of human ingenuity but it is given to us as an original endowment and as the fruit of sincere effort. In short, loving relationships have a distinct spiritual dimension by virtue of manifesting different aspects of God's love. A vision statement of healthy family life needs to pay special attention to that spiritual aspect of love.

Returning to the four types of love within the family, we discover a unique significance for each of them. First, there are sibling love and conjugal love that show mainly a horizontal nature, emphasizing growth and development in the physical order among family members of the same generation. Brothers and sisters express their love through sharing, mutual respect and cooperation, thus undergoing a growth process in preparation for marriage. They develop their sexual identity and face a unique growing experience during the time of puberty. The unmistakable sign of human self-transcendence consists of our identity as sexual beings. That is to say, man and woman are created for the sake of the complementary partner of love (5).

Conjugal love begins with marriage and marks the fulfillment of sexual love as originally intended by God. Husband and wife within their horizontal loving exchange of mutual self-giving develop a two-in-oneness and in this way establish the ideal of becoming a perfect object partner for God, thus being able to respond to his love. That is to say, God's vertical love finds its substantial expression in the horizontal love of the mature couple, thus forming a three-in-oneness between husband, wife and God. The realization of true love through the God intended ideal of marriage affirms also human co-creatorship. God's fruitfulness is expressed in human fruitfulness. The birth of children then marks the propagation of true love through the establishment of lineage. Ultimately, we can understand that the married couple and the family become the full expression of the image of God, thus expanding the earlier notion that individuals are the complete divine image.

The remaining two kinds of love, namely, Children's love and parent's love are primarily of a vertical nature where the mutual response of dependence and unconditional giving connects two generations. Children take mainly a receptive position that is best described with a disposition of piety and gratitude, while parents assume an actively loving role that reflects a sacrificial disposition. When referring to its spiritual dimension, the parent-child relationship signifies the loving relation between God and human beings. We are created as God's children who themselves become fathers and mothers, thus experiencing the parental heart of God (6). Furthermore, the family becomes the place for the unfolding of God's love through establishing a family lineage through the appearance of the new generation. In fact, inasmuch as establishing the family lineage communicates the parental experience, it marks also the goal of personal maturation, namely, to become the image of God by inheriting his parental heart. Here, human beings have the potential to realize the essence of their own personality by reflecting God's unchanging parental heart of unconditional giving (7).

Experiencing an Inner Transformation

Discovering our God given potential to become loving personalities involves an internal change. Our understanding of the aforementioned vision of the healthy family may well be the starting point for such an inner transformation. To illustrate that internal change in our personality, we turn to Sally and Tom, exploring their thoughts.

After Sally changed her heart she thinks to herself:
However, something deep in my heart tells me this is my man and even if there are all these walls to climb, I still love him. I only wish we could turn our love from the lofty highs of hope into an actual fulfilling experience right here on this earth. I realize this means hard work on my part to overcome the habit of focusing on his weak points and always trying to change him. Rather, I will develop the habit of acknowledging all his
good points, becoming aware of his God given talents and encouraging him to use them. Before mentioning one point of improvement, I will show him my appreciation about
several of his good character traits.

After Tom changed his heart he thinks to himself:
Still I know that Sally is special. She is the one I will always love no matter how unexplainable our marriage sometimes turns out to be. Somehow I feel that there is another dimension in our relationship waiting to be discovered, that our common journey to find genuine love actually has a destination. It seems to be worthwhile to have a dream about our marriage and to invest sincere efforts to make that dream come true. I will start really listening to her, so I can understand her feelings. I realize we need to spend more quality time together so that our love for each other can grow and we will be able to experience genuine intimacy.

To carry out all good intentions for change in our marriage relationship, we need to be constantly motivated by the ultimate purpose of our lives, namely, to respond to the love of our Creator. Not only the spouses but all family members will understand the importance of a strong spiritual life that functions as the foundation for our desired internal transformation.

Conclusion

We have explored our God given potential for a healthy family life. As much as we may acknowledge such an essential orientation towards loving relationships in our human nature, nevertheless, our contemporary culture rallies behind a different message. It is called individualism. We are supposed to believe that a complete life is the result of paying attention to the self. The self is selected as the locus for advancing the quality of life, resulting in a pre-occupation with self-realization, self-gratification and self-fulfillment. Here, emerges the need for an internal transformation from secular self-centered individualism towards a God-centered individualism that cares for others first.
We have shown that at the core of the needed inner transformation lies in a new vision of the family. Such a vision implies that individualism cannot be an end in itself but needs to be redefined in terms of including the higher purpose of building a loving family and serving the community.

We can summarize our discussions by showing that we need to experience such an inner transformation on three levels to reach a new human self-understanding that serves as the foundation for lasting peace.

On the individual level, we need to redefine the healthy personality by allowing reason to exist in the service of love. The past emphasis on our rational faculty has caused an analysis of the self that often ignored our God given potential to focus first on building loving relationships. That is to say, the education of the intellect needs to be based on character education also described as the education of the heart that takes place mainly in the family. In short, the healthy personality attains a mind-body unity that is directed towards realizing the ideal of true love. In this way, we reach the consciousness of a new individualism that is centered on self-transcendence and the higher purpose of living for the well being of others. In terms of the practical implications of such a consciousness of self-transcendence, we may point to the IIFWP family based literacy educational programs that promote the full development of the human potential.

On the family level, we find the resources for making the ideal of true love substantial. The present divorce culture, having its roots in secular individualism, needs to be transformed into a marriage culture that affirms the new individualism of living for the sake of others (8). Once the love of parents finds fulfillment in mutual commitment and affection while embracing God's loving partnership, the raising of good children will follow naturally. Two initiatives should be mentioned that raise the awareness of the need for healthy families. Rev. Moon's International Blessing Ceremonies promote harmony across racial, ethnical and national lines, while the Pure Love Alliance has the goal to prepare young people for committed marriages.
Furthermore, the central importance of family life is now supported on the national and global levels. The United States Congress has approved the celebration of the Day of the Family on each forth Sunday in July, while the United Nations declared The International Year of the Family in 1994 and is preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2004.

On the society level, we need to leave behind our narrow agendas of partisanship and historical divisions rooted in ethnicity, race and nationalism. Such a healing of the past is effected by the new consciousness for humanity that is best described as the consciousness of the global family. Here lies the ultimate vision for world peace. We may add that peace is not just the absence of conflict but it marks the active state of a fulfilling family life for all humankind. Let us go forward and support with our own lives the centrality of God loving families for our common goal of attaining lasting world peace.

Thank you very much.

Chat history

(Note: chat history for Google Talk is only available to users who are signed in with a Gmail username.)

Chat history allows you to store the text of your Gmail and Google Talk chats in your Gmail account so you can easily search for them later. You can even respond to these chats like you would to regular Gmail messages.

To access your chat history, click the Chats label in your Gmail account. A list of chats will appear, similar to the way conversations are listed in your inbox. You can forward, label, star, and trash chats just like Gmail messages.

When you search in Gmail, matching chat conversations will show up along with matching email conversations. All chats are labeled Chats and are marked with the chat icon () so you can easily distinguish them from emails.

To take better advantage of Gmail's chat functionality, learn how to change your chat history settings, how to go 'off the record' or browse our full list of chat topics.

The amount of Unsolicited Electronic Junk Mail otherwise know as spam is on the rise. It is becoming harder and harder to avoid getting spam in your inbox. However there are things that you can and should do...
Stopping Unwanted E-mail and Spam

Are you getting snowed under by spam?

If you are getting snowed under by spam already? Then it might be to late. The spammers have already got your Email address. It might have circulated the globe by now from spammer to spammer. What you need to do is change your Email address. 'NO' I hear you cry. OK then be difficult Check the last point below 'Consider using 'anti-spam' or
'spam prevention' software.' It may help.

If you are using an email address given to you by your ISP then contact them. Tell them about the spam and ask them if you can change your Email address. This should not be a problem. Most ISP's will help users getting lots of spam.

If you are using a free Email service such as Yahoo or Hotmail then the process is a bit simpler. Just create a new account. Or try a paid Email service if you can as these will have better control over incoming mail (usually).

Once you have a new or *clean* Email address then there are lots of things you can do to help reduce the amount of spam getting in to your inbox.

•Always have at least 2 different Email accounts. (preferably more) One is given to friends and family etc. The other is used for everything else.

•Be careful with your friends and family Email address.
Do NOT use it on the web. IE: signing up on website's. Use your second address.

•Always read the 'Privacy Policy'.
Before you give any Email address to any website check for a privacy policy. Read it. This document will tell you what the owner can and will do with information you submit. If a website does not have a privacy policy DO NOT SIGN UP. The same information will probably be on other sites just do a google.

•If you post in newsgroups be warned.
Posting to newsgroups is an invitation for spammers to find you. If you do post then create a new email address that you will *just* use for newsgroups.
Or you can consider adding a word, or a character, that is obviously out of place right in the middle of your Email address. If you Email address was john@smith.com then you could try john@nospam.smith.com
This method is used mainly for newsgroups as website's that send you an automated message when you sign up would not be able to get your correct address.

•Do not trust any Email Messages!!
Just because something looks ok doesn't mean it is. Remember the old adage 'If it sounds too good to be true, - it probably is!!'
Email is just another way for someone to try and con you. If you receive an Email from your bank IT MIGHT NOT BE FROM YOUR BANK. Always check and never follow links that take you to a website to enter your personal details. This is a big subject and we will tell you more very soon in another tutorial.

•Email is not secure.
Any and all email could be intercepted and read without you knowing it. NO EMAIL IS SECURE. Never email your credit card number or other personal details to ANYONE. If a company asked you to, remind them that Email is not secure. If they insist take your business else where.

•Do NOT open any files you are not expecting.
If someone send you a message with the subject 'Re: our meeting' or 'Re: the information you requested' STOP and think do you know this person? If not why are they sending you files? 99% of the time on my machine they are viruses or trojan horse programs. If you do open one by mistake RUN YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM NOW you do have one don't you?

•Consider using 'anti-spam' or 'spam prevention' software.
There is lots of software available to help you stop / report spam. However most are not free. You will have to may to use most but not all software. Spend some time looking around before you choose any piece of software. We will compile a list of several 'anti-spam' or 'spam prevention' tools and add it here soon. For now you can try a search like this on Google. You will find lots.
If you can think of other things that I have forgotten then please let me know and I will update this article with any suggestions.

Looking after your kids is number one. We know that. We will guide you through the minefield that is the Internet. There are lots of things that you can do.
Read through our check list below and see how you can let your kids access the internet safely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keeping Kids Safe
It is so easy to access just about anything on the world wide web. Children often know a lot more about the Internet than their parents. Just have a read through the list below. This will give you some pointers.

One of the most important things you can do is spend time with your child when they have access to the world wide web.

We know that is not always possible, so what else is there. Well quite a few. But none are as good as spending time with your child when they have access to the world wide web. You must remember that no matter how good a piece of software is it may still crash. Or worse just stop working.

•Teach your children about the dangers of giving out their personal details
•Encourage your children to talk about what they do online
•Use a good ISP that lets you set limits for children. AOL is very good for this
•Use Content Advisor if you use Internet Explorer
•Use a piece of filtering software

Teach your Children Make sure you teach your children about the dangers of giving their names, school etc out to people they don't know. Make sure they realise that the other person might not be telling the truth about themselves. If a child is to young to grasp the dangers then they should not be using the World Wide Web unsupervised.

top

Encourage your children to talk
Make sure you encourage your children to talk about what they do online. Find out what they like and don't like about using the World Wide Web. Make sure children know what to do if they visit a web site they don't like. Run good popup blocking software on any children's logon accounts on your computer. Don't tell children off if you see they have been visiting sites they shouldn't. Talk to them and encourage them to tell you about how they got there. Also check your computer for spyware regularly.

top

Use a good ISP
If you have children then your ISP can make all the difference. Some ISP's like AOL have built in parental controls. These can be used to control what other members of your family are allowed to se on the Internet. AOL has settings such as PG, 15, etc. Each can be customised to block or allow things like chat rooms, Email and more.

top

Use Content Advisor
If you use the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser you can use the built in feature called 'Content Advisor'. For information on Content Advisor and its limitations visit the Microsoft Website.

top

Filtering Software
If your ISP does not provide parental control then you can always download software you can install to restrict access. If you do a search on Google for 'parental controls' you will find lots of software, most charge a fee. Some offer a free trial such as CyberPatrol. There are many more online safety programs, the Google ads above should contain a couple.

Always read the website and documentation of any software before you buy to make sure the program does what you want. Try searching on google for 'review ' to see what you can find out. Then when you are satisfied you can make the purchase. Be sure to follow our 'Safe Shopping Online' guide.

What is Gmail?

Gmail is Google's free web-based email service. Considered in beta testing status since its public release in 2004, the Gmail service has become famous for the rapid development of new features. Thus, the beta status of the service is not expected to change. Also, the beta status has given Google cover for numerous slip ups with the service, including accidental deletion of user's accounts. Software in beta status is not to be considered fit for critical applications, and users are warned to back up their data frequently.

Storage space has been Gmail's "killer feature" since its inception. Introduced with 1 GB of storage in an era when few web-based email providers offered more than 25 megabytes, Gmail was an immediate success. As other email service providers added storage to compete, Gmail added other features such as chat, draft auto save, keyboard shortcuts, and of course continually increasing the available storage space. Many of these features relied on JavaScript and AJAX methods, which rendered the service incompatible with older web browsers, screen readers, and security-conscious surfers who disable such features. In response, Gmail introduced a plain HTML interface that works in all web browsers.

An early criticism of the Gmail service concerned the Adwords advertisements displayed in the interface when viewing a message. The advertisement content was relevant to the text of the email message, leading some to believe that Google was reading user's email. In fact, a computer was parsing the email for keywords and displaying relevant advertisements. No human has ever had access to user's email other than the account holder himself. Other common criticisms of the Gmail service include the slow rate at which requested features are added, yet innovative unneeded features are being added weekly. For instance, all dates are presented in the American MM-DD-YYYY format, which is confusing to users in the rest of the world who expect DD-MM-YYYY. Instead of adding an option to specify date format, which is a rather trivial feature, Gmail engineers have added HTML formatting to email, RSS feeds, and a chat feature.

BMW-Sauber file protest in Formula One diffuser row

Melbourne - BMW-Sauber Thursday filed a protest against rival teams Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota over their cars three days ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen said the team was protesting over the use of the three teams' diffusers.

Protests from Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull were expected to follow.

The dispute centres around the rear diffusers, a part of the bodywork between the rear wheels and under the rear wing which disperse air from under the car.

It is claimed the designs of the Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota cars will give them an unfair speed advantage going into the start of the season.

New regulations limit the size of the diffusers but the three teams have found a potential loophole in the rules by designing the rear bodywork to effectively act as part of the diffuser, increasing its size. (dpa

Jonas Brothers' tour stage for upcoming roadshow across the globe is previewed to be a huge two-floor stage.

What to expect from Jonas Brothers' upcoming world tour has been revealed through a video, which gives a closer look into their tour stage. "We're so excited about our upcoming tour that we had to give you guys a sneak peak of our stage," so a message posted on their YouTube in companion of the video.

Put forward in the form of an animated video, the sneak peek shows a huge two-floor stage set in a center of an indoor arena. Stretching to the right and left sides of the main stage, as seen also in the video, are two smaller stages.

Jonas Brothers will kick off their world tour on May 19 in Peru, Lima and will continue touring through November. Jordin Sparks and Honor Society have been booked as their supporting acts. Fans can visit Jonas Brothers' MySpace to obtain more details on their upcoming shows.

Beside prepping to travel across the globe, the Jonas boys are also busy recording new music for their fourth studio album "Lines, Vines and Trying Times". Wii Fit or gym?

Lawton_The Nintendo Wii is a popular toy. You can even get a good workout from using the Wii Fit Game. But would you actually turn in your gym membership for the electronic routine?

A Lawton personal trainer says the Wii workout is good option for some. "I think is good for those who want to say at home and for those that choose to spend that much money at one time," said Tuesday Rivera. Rivera adds one-on-one time is important with clients. "They can do what it tells them but they can't ask any questions later. If something doesn't feel right they can't say well how come this doesn't feel right or am I doing it wrong. They can't really interact with it."

For gym fanatics, it varies. "Just all depends if you are focused or not. If you are real focused you probably could do it," said Cyril Brown

People at the gym said they haven't seen a drop off in memberships and they don't anticipate one anytime soon.

Lady GaGa Biography

Lady GaGa (born Joanne Stefani Germanotta, 20.3.1986)

Lady GaGa is an American singer and songwriter. She started working for Interscope Records when she was 20 years old, writing songs for Pussycat Dolls, among others.

Lady GaGa: Childhood & Early Career

Lady GaGa was born in Yonkers, New York. Her parents are Italian and she attended a private school, the Catholic Convent of the Sacred Heart. Previous pupils of the school include Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton and Caroline Kennedy.

She started to learn piano as a young child and wrote her first ballad when she was 13 years old. By 14, she was performing at open mic nights and at 17, she earned early admission as a music student to the Tisch School of Arts at New York University. She is one of only 20 people in the world to have ever done so.

Lady GaGa performed in a number of bands, such as SGBand and Mackin Pulsifer, playing venues on the Lower East Side. She soon decided to break away from rock 'n' roll music, and began performing in burlesque shows.

Lady GaGa got her name when the producer Rob Fusari compared her vocal style to that of Freddie Mercury and took the nickname from the Queen song 'Radio GaGa'. It was Fusari that helped her to write some of her early hits, including 'Disco Heaven', 'Dirty Ice Cream' and 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich'.

Lady GaGa: Breakthrough

Lady GaGa was briefly signed to Def Jam but the working relationship was terminated after just a few months. In 2008, she was signed to Interscope Records. She has been contracted to write songs for a number of high profile pop acts, including Britney Spears, New Kids On the Block and Fergie from Black Eyed Peas.

Akon recognized Lady GaGa's vocal talent when she laid down guide vocals for tracks that she had written for one of his acts. Akon introduced her to RedOne, who produced her debut album. The first track that they produced together was a mash-up of AC/DC's 'T.N.T.' and Mötley Crüe's 'Girls, Girls, Girls'.

In 2007, Lady GaGa performed her act Lady GaGa and The Starlight Revue - with performance artist Lady Starlight - at the Lollapalooza festival.

The following year, GaGa moved to Los Angeles and worked on the completion of her debut album, The Fame. She works with a collective of artists, clothes designers, stage designers and sound artists, under the collective name 'Haus of GaGa'.

The first single to be released from The Fame was 'Just Dance', which reached number one in five different countries. This was followed with 'Poker Face', which went one better and reached number one in six countries. Lady GaGa's first concert tour was with the newly-reformed New Kids On The Block
